Barons fight back

The Barons began the upward climb to get back into the running for a spot in February's Elite 8 tournament this past weekend at the Booth Invitational. The Barons moved to a 6 and 9 record with some keys wins to help their bid for a spot at the Elite 8.

The Barons opened the tournament with a 56 - 29 win against the Mount Pearl Huskies. With EVERY barons player on the scoreboard this was a solid team win for the Baron and great opportunity to practice offense and defensive strategies with rookie players. A. Martret led the scoring with 12pts and 4 steals, J. Noftle added 10pts, while R. Evans and D. Rees chipped in 7pts a piece. A. Gough added 11 rebounds and 4 blocks, while A. Edmunds chipped in another 7 boards for the win. The team put up a total 44 rebounds to win the game. Despite the win, the Barons shot only 37% from the line and 36% from the field. The Barons will need a stronger showing to take on tougher court challenges!

In game 2, the Barons couldn't hold on the lead and deep into the 4th St. Kevin's pressed ahead of the barons for a 74-64 win. In the weakest showing yet, the Barons recorded 35 turnovers to the Mavericks, sealing the loss. A. Gough led the offense with 17pts, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocks. A. Martret added 14 pts and 5 rebounds, while J. Noftle chipped in another 10pts and 7 rebounds. The Barons shot 59% from the line, and a disappointing 35% from the field.

The Barons bounced back for a 75-64 win over the Baltimore Broncos. L. Crocker led the offense with 21pts (including 7/7 free throw shooting) and 12 rebounds. A. Martrett added 17 pts and 4 steals, while A. Gough chipped in another 12pts and 8 rebounds. The Barons shot a record 91% from the line, went 0 FOR 11 from the 3pt line (lesson learned we hope) and 35% from the field. the Barons will have to improve their field shooting to stay on top of the competition.

In the final game of round robin play, the Barons met the revitalized Corner Brook Titans. A. Gough led the attack with 20pts and 12 rebounds. A. Martret added 19pts and L. Crocker added 12 pts and 9 rebounds. J. Noftle and S. Hansford each added 8 rebounds for the win. The Barons put up a total of 43 rebounds for the win, shooting 73% from the line, 24% from the 3pt line, and 37% from the field.

The Barons met Heart in the Crossover and dominated the game from tip to finish leading to a 75-57 win. A. Martret took charge with 31pts, while A. Gough added 17pts, 9 rebounds and L. Crocker 16pts, 9 rebounds for the win. S. Hansford and J. Noftle chipped in 15 and 12 rebounds respectively, bringing total rebounds to a record 48 boards. The Barons shot 52% from the line, 10% from the 3pt line, and a solid 43% from the field.

The Barons once again met St. Kevins in the Championship game falling short to a 83-61 loss against a sharp shooting 6-man St. Kevins team. S. Hansford led the offense with 16 pts and 10 rebounds. A. Gough added 15 pts and 4 steals, while A. Martret chipped in another 13pts and 7 rebounds. The Barons put forth 15 offensive boards, shot 80% from the line, 29% from the 3pt line, and 35% from the field. The Barons real weakness was once again 29 turnovers leading to a very respectable 2nd place finish.

Congratulations to A. Martret on a well-deserved Most Spirited Player of the tournament award.

Where are the Mighty Barons?

The Barons failed to show at the Gonzaga invitational Nov 28 to 30th, 2008. Dropping another 3 losses, the Barons move to a 2 and 7 record.

The Barons were trounced upon by the Vikings in the tournament opener. Stats were not kept by the bench.

The Barons lost their second match to The Westenders Club team. After dominating the game for 3 quarters, the Barons slipped in foul trouble giving the westenders the edge needs to slowly climb back into the game and eventually the 68-61 win over the Barons. A. Martret put forth 32 pts and 4 steals while A. Gough added 16 pts, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks to come up short to the young but strong club team. Shooting efforts were dismal overall shooting 54% from the line, 11% from the 3pt line, and only 31% from the field.

The Barons lost a heartbreaking third game to the Booth Braves. A well fought game, A. Martret led the offensive strike with a record breaking 39pt game for the Barons. J. Noftle added 10pts and 15 rebounds with D. Rees chipping in another 6 pts for the defeated Barons.
